Circles and Ovals
This is showing the very basics of circles and ovals.
Any editing has to be done before applying object to path.

If you draw a circle or oval the shape can be altered by moving the nodes.

Below shows how to return the shape to a whole ellipse.
If you start with a whole ellipse and want to change it just move the nodes.

If you are just learning Inkscape and do change the shape of the ellipse you may find you do not get the result you expect when you cut. I have just shown there are two options - open (arc) and closed (segment). If you use a colour fill you may not notice the difference until you cut out the shape. I have attached a few screenshots below showing the differences.

Examples showing an ellipse using the open (arc) option. You can see when the colour fill is used the shape looks complete but if you use a stroke line you can clearly see each shape is open. The examples showing the stroke line are the lines the blade on your cutter will follow.

Examples showing an ellipse using the closed (segment) option. This time regardless of using a fill only or a stroke only the result looks the same.

Note:
By default the ellipse shape will open with the settings used previously.
If you prefer the ellipse settings to remain the same each time it is used, the setting can be changed in preferences.
To change the setting open Inkscape Preferences, located on the top menu bar or ( File> Inkscape Preferences) or Shift+Control+P
A new menu selection will open. Go to Tools>Shapes>Ellipse and change the setting.
