Great idea and good to know twist works with more than a basic shape.

'I Knew it I knew it' you and PapaSue are ganging up on me.....I can never remember if its object to path or stroke to path, so I think I did an exclusion and then I tried the extrude and I got one of those Inkscape fatal error where inkscape closed down on me.
