Help Using Inkscape / Re: new to inkscape have question
« Last post by Pmazie on October 16, 2017, 12:42:08 PM »
Wow Brynn thank-you for all the work you are putting into this! The flamingos thread looks to be really interesting. I do not (sadly) work in Python. Wish I did and I may try to learn. I used to do some coding for CNC machines which worked with gcodes. But that was quite a few years ago now. I have installed the embroidery extension from this website http://www.jonh.net/~jonh/inkscape-embroidery/ but when I try to run it i get a message that says: Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "embroider.py", line 35, in <module>
    import shapely.geometry as shgeo
ImportError: No module named shapely.geometry

when I google shapely.geometry I have found these files https://pypi.python.org/pypi/Shapely    (none that say shapely.geometry exactly) but then I do not know how to install them as a module which I think I would also have to rename. But just putting them in the Extentions folder (which works for .py and .inx files does not work for this program call even if I rename them. I have looked at Jon Howell's code https://github.com/stesie/inkscape-embroidery/blob/master/embroider.py
but much of it looks to be dependent on shapely. If I change the call there I have no way to compile the programing back into python.

I am beginning to think I am in way over my head. I may be able to learn to write python but I am not sure it would be worth all the effort However I am willing to try to install shapely as a module if someone could give me direction. If that fails I guess I save my pennies until I can afford to purchase a program that will do what i want.

Here's another extension for embroidery:  https://github.com/stesie/inkscape-embroidery  All I know is that it works with Inkscape 0.48.3, and not with Ubuntu  12.04.  If you learn anything else about it, would you let me know, so I can update our info?

Did I just find the extension?  https://www.dropbox.com/s/zch6y16dz3rc0pd/svg2embrOffline.zip  Hhmmm....no, apparently not.  If it were an extension, it would contain both PY and INX file or files.  I don't see either.

I'm thinking they must have decided to convert files for their visitors, rather than maintain extensions for Inkscape.

But hopefully you will learn more with all the other info I shared, especially the mailing list discussions.

Ok, the first thing I found in the research is this page:  http://svg2embr.wasbo.net/index.php  It looks like they don't make the extension available anymore, but rather convert your files that you upload.  It may not work at all, and it wouldn't do any good for me to test, because I wouldn't know an embroidery file if it bit me!

But if you try it, would you let me know what happens?  It will help me to update the info which the Inkscape project maintains about extensions.

And it looks like there's a forum here:  http://www.wasbo.net/svg2embr/phpBB3/  It doesn't look very active....but it's not exactly archaic either.

Still researching....

Ok, I found a comment in yet a 3rd forum, where he says he used the tutorials from the wasbo.net site, but he used the extension found on this site:  http://www.jonh.net/~jonh/inkscape-embroidery/.  I seem to have some vague recollection that the extensions which were on wasbo.net have been missing for quite a while.  But as I said,  I'll do some more research on that.

This other extension (jonh.net site) isn't a fully fledged embroidery program either.  But he does use it for part of the process.  Whenever I hear from him about the images, I ask him if it's ok for me to share his email address with you, if you like.

Aarrgh, rats!  I had found the topic, but with the images missing, it's rather meaningless.  I just forgot to paste in the link (think I was falling asleep at the moment ).  Anyway, I messaged him, so we can find a way to get them back.  It might just be a problem with his website (where they are hosted).  But one way or another, I'm fairly sure we can find a way to get them back.  (Oh!  Maybe try the wayback machine??)

https://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php?topic=336.0

Well Inkscape does not have a fully functional embroidery program.  I've heard about someone working on some kind of embroidery program, but I don't know how extensive it will be, or about their progress, or any estimate when it might be available.  If you're interested in the programming side of it, you can find the messages in the mailing list archives:  https://sourceforge.net/p/inkscape/mailman/inkscape-devel/  Probably you can just search "embroidery" to find them. (I think the archives also contain email addresses, if you wanted to contact them.)

You didn't mention what kind of coding skills you have.  Although even if you did, I probably wouldn't understand.  It is true that there's a nexus between vector paths, cutting programs, and embroidery programs.  But as far as I understand, it gets pretty tough with embroidery.  For cutting, the raw vector paths, or code generated by the paths (such as gcode) is all that's needed.  For embroidery, you have all these other things to consider, such as stitch type and length, type of fabric, deciding whether to take a half stitch when approaching a border (for satin stitch type of stitches) and etc.  At least that's my understanding.  It's also my understanding that the complexity with embroidery is probably why Inkscape doesn't have an extension for this yet.

The guy who is doing the embroidery work with Inkscape (the one with missing images) Inkscape basically only does the artwork.  He does rely on other software to run the machine (for those extra things I mentioned above).

I'll try to do some more research about finding that extension.  It's possible he's using a different extension, because that site (wasbo.net) does not look the one I looked at while following the above topic.  But in any case, that's the only address we have for that extension.  So if they aren't there, we need to try and find if they're available anywhere.  I'll keep you posted.

Hi Brynn  :ur: Thank-you! for accepting me and for the reply to my post.  Your first link was the one that brought me to your site. She no longer posts and recommends everyone who views her posts to come to this board. Your second post I have also investigated. Although her online program will digitize things into embroidery pattern it is not very good. I have looked at the code she provides on the site but i do not see the inkscape extensions i am looking for there.  I was hoping to be able to do a better job if I could do the process my self  and I think I could in Inkscape (though I am at the beginning of the learning curve on it right now.) I am hoping that files that cut things in wood or on cutting machines would not be too different that files that run an embroidery machine. Of course I could purchase a program that could do what i am looking for but its well over $100 dollars. I have the time to learn but not the money to spend.

Your last sentence really gives me some encouragement. I hope you can find the messages because that is what I am looking for. Again Thank-you for you help. May you day be blessed. Debby

Welcome to the forum!

Ok, I found this sort of old topic about it:  https://www.inkscapecuttingdesign.com/smf/index.php?topic=924.0  A tutorial I guess.

And it looks like the extension can be downloaded here:  http://svg2embr.wasbo.net/index.php

I'm not sure either how well it works or whether it works at all.

Here's a topic showing another Inkscape user's whole embroidery project from start (drawing the design) to finish (embroidered garments).  It's not very old, but unfortunately the messages all seem to be missing.  I"m looking into getting them replaced.  So  :xf2:

Help Using Inkscape / new to inkscape have question
« Last post by Pmazie on October 13, 2017, 02:21:42 PM »
Hi I am new to Inkscape and new to embroidery. I understand that you can use files called netting.py and netting.inx in inkscape to digitize embroidery files. I have looked all over the internet for these files and the lollypop website that I have been directed to by two different web pages no longer has these files. I was hoping that someone here may have these extensions for inkscape and could email or some how get a copy of them to me. I would truly appreciate any help. Thank-you.
