This is a tutorial I created for making a logo using circular grids.  The logo itself was created by Franco Grignani in 1964.  imitating the masters is a great way to learn!

As I commented to this message on InkscapeForum.com, I would not use the Eraser tool.  It tends to be buggy, in my experience.  I would use path operation such as Difference or Cut Path, with a duplicate of the larger crescents used to "cut off" the tips of the smaller crescents.
