Title: Snowflakes svg
Post by: Technomum on August 01, 2010, 03:26:28 AM
I know, I know, it's a bit early   but I thought you might like to put these to one side and have a look at them later.  I have zipped the file as .svg seems disallowed for upload - am I right?

Thank you so much for sharing, they are very pretty snowflakes.
Snowflakes are perfect for Aussies as it is winter and ski season here.

I have tried to allow svg and pdf uploads in the admin panel and so far it keeps failing. We are both trying to learn all the controls and functions available at the back end of the forum and can hopefully fix this problems soon. I have obviously not ticked at least one box correctly.

I know what you mean Carolyn about the extensions,  mine won't allow it either.  And I have found it is better just to zip a file and send it.  That way people with slower connections have a better chance of getting it.  There is so much technical stuff running these forums,  it is crazy.

Oh, Techie, thanks so much for the snowflakes. I am wanting to do a board to hang on my front door that says " Let it Snow " with snowflakes all around it. So, now I have the snow flakes to go with my saying. Vicky

Thank you!  I'm thinking outside the box--cutting the second and third in green for sepals and stamens respectively for 3D flowers.  The first would make cool fireworks!

Hello,

Thank-you for posting the wonderful snowflakes!  I'm new to the site, and new to inkscape, but I'm loving all the possibilities so far.  In my excitement to use the files, I've already tried to open and cut them out.   This might be a completely newbie mistake, but when I opened the file, the only snowflake there was the one on the far right with the round balls at the end.   Am I don't something wrong :?:

Thanks
Kalycakes

Hi Kalycakes welcome to the Inkscape Cutting forum.

What would be really helpful is if you could put what version Windows you are using, what electronic cutter and also what version Inkscape.
This info is just so that the right person will assist you with your cutting from Inkscape.

Hi K,

These were made in Inkscape .47 and Windows XP.  I am not sure if there is any incompatibility.  I have just checked the file (as I posted it) and it opens perfectly well for me.  It is saved in portrait format.  Have you tried zooming out to see if the other pieces are above the one with the round balls?  A shot in the dark really as I am not using .48 yet or Windows 7 and so I cannot check what happens.   If anyone else has this problem would they please let me know and I will see if I can get someone to save them in .48 for me.  I don't wish to download .48 yet as apparently there are still several bugs.

Have you tried opening them in your cutting program? If so what one and what version are you using?

K, I've opened the file in Inkscape 048 and in SCAL 2.030 with no problem, but then I'm on a Mac.  I know this doesn't help you but methinks the file is fine, just something odd in your view.  What cutting program do you use, or what cutter?  Perhaps that is a clue.  We will figure this out.

I should also mention that it opens fine in inkscape.

So are you saying the problem is with SCAL opening the file, and not Inkscape?  If so  can you do a screen capture (print screen) and post it so we can see what you do?

I read some while back that there were problems using SCAL with Windows 7 and I saw it suggested that one runs Windows 7 in XP mode.  I am not sure if this is your problem or whether you might find a bit more information on a Google search.

Hi Again,

So Papasue, I posted a screen shot in my album cuz I had no idea how to attach it to a message.  I'm pretty thankful that I figured out how to do a screen shot!  On a funnier note, I just figured out today that SCAL was an acronym for Sure Cuts a Lot... duh
I'll get the hang of this one day!  I'm such a newb.

Hmmm,  it appears from the picture that your mat is 6x12 and you are not seeing the whole image on that size mat.  You didn't have the image selected so I can see the size in the properties box.  I suggest you try

View/Fit to Window and see what you get.
Or select the image and look to see what the size dimension is and using the keep dimensions boxes make the image the size that fits.

the snowflakes are in a vertical row and that may be one of the issues for that small mat.

Let me know, I love a puzzle.

Maybe we take this offline and work PM as we are into SCAL and not Inkscape.  We'll see if this works for you first.

It looks a tad distorted too in your photo.  I am afraid I know absolutely nothing about SCAL.  As Susan says try making a bigger mat.  You could also try changing the document properties in Inkscape and moving the snowflakes into a horizontal line so that the snowflakes can be saved in landscape format.

Hi Kalycakes,  First, I would recommend that you use Inkscape 0.47 with SCAL1.  There are some compatibility issues with Ink48/SCAL1.  You can download Inkscape 0.47 here.  http://sourceforge.net/projects/inkscape/files/ (http://sourceforge.net/projects/inkscape/files/)

The file did the same thing for me when I tried to import it into SCAL1.  I then opened it in Ink47 and selected each snowflake and used Path/Union.  Then I was able to see all three in SCAL1.  That is your first thing to try any time an svg won't import correctly into SCAL.  HTH
