Title: Layers in Inkscape/SCAL not coming across
Post by: kdixon5720 on July 12, 2012, 03:46:56 PM
Hi. I'm fairly new to all this but I dabble around. I have somewhat successfully created multi-layered designs in inkscape and saved as svgs but when I pull them up in SCAL, they are all one color/layer and I have to spend ample time ungrouping and "remaking" layers. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong?

Hello,

I'll try and help you, but I have to ask some q's first.

What version of SCAL are you using SCAL1, SCAL2.xxx, SCAL3.xx or eCAL?
What version of Inkscape?
What OS are you using Win, Vista. etc or Mac?

When you say you have a "layered" file in Inkscape do you mean that you have physicall created individaul layers and placed different pieces of the design in different layers in Inkscape, like if you look at your layers panel and have name/pasted different elements into their own layer or are they all in the top/root layer?

If they are not separated into different layers (add layer) then SCAL (any SCAL will  just have them all in one layer.

So let me know or you can send me your file or post it here and I'll take a look.

Hope to see you soon.

Inkscape .48
SCAL 2
Windows 7
Do I save my file as svg or can I save it as something else?
As far as layers, they are just different colors. Am I missing a step? I used to have a Wishblade and in the program for designing the different colors were the layers.......

Inkscape has a separate layers function. You actually have to create the layer and move the objects to separate layers. I don't use SCAL so I am unable to give assistance. I am sure Susan or Heather will be along shortly and can help you further.

Yes you save it as svg and IMPORT it into SCAL2.  My concern is that the text will not trace well in SCAL2 but you can try it. else  if you send me the svg file I'll separate it into individual layers for you so that it will show up in SCAL as layers by colors or whatever you want the layers to be.  Let me know.

I can't use the jpg as it will not trace as nicely.

Oh I've done that. It looks great except the lines are all the same color and I had to separate into layers. I've done this several times and the files cut great. I was just hoping there was a way to create it in inkscape to avoid having to rework in SCAL. I hoped I was doing something wrong......

If SCAL isn't keeping the colors that you set then I would guess that you have an older version of SCAL2.  The later versions did put each separate Object of Path into it's own layer in SCAL.  It isn't necessary to create the layers in Inkscape.  The colors should remain as you set them also.  Go to this Craft Edge page and request a download link for the last version of SCAL2 (2.044)  http://www.craftedge.com/support/lostsw.php (http://www.craftedge.com/support/lostsw.php)

Also make sure that the Layers window is visible in SCAL by setting your workspace to advanced (in the SCAL menu select Windows/Workspace/Advanced).  HTH

Yep....looks like my SCAL is 2.030. Will the 2.044 still work with Cricut? I know Provocraft got snippy and I don't want to ruin what I do have. Thanks so much for your help!!

Yes it will.  Any version of SCAL2 will still work with the Cricut.  :D
