Have been following Welding words instructions but how do you View in outline, cannot see outline in View menu.

To view in outline go View and you find options to view on outline or normal.

OK, I've found Outline in Display mode but having found it and used it with selected text it doesn't seem to do anything.

If your text hasn't been converted to Path it will show as solid letters in Outline.  Only Paths show as outlines in Outline view.
