I am thinking about buying the new Silhouette Cameo. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

It's a great machine.  It depends on how you want to use it.  I did talk to Leo @ Sure Cuts Alot to see if it would use their program like the Silhouette SD.  He didn't seem to think at that time it would, but it had not been released yet.  Leo State that he feared they may be going the way that Provo  Craft did since they want to promote their own software and files.  He mentioned to me that the new Sizzix Eclips would be a good machine.  It will have it's own stand along Sure Cuts Alot by the end of this month.  I, too would welcome any suggestions since I'm lookeing to replace a Cricut Expression.  Thanks

I had been told, thru e-mail, from Silhouette, that it's not compatible with SCAL and possibly MTC ...not sure about that ....so that's why I basically backed off from purchasing a Silhouette SD or the Cameo....will stick with Expression.  Too bad that Silhouette wants to 'stick' with their software...they're lose out like Provo Craft is doing.

I currently own a Silhouette SD and like it. I wanted to get something that would cut 12 inches.

Silhouette Designer version already allows svg import.  It is as simple as dragging an svg off the desktop.  I thought normally what happened was that SCAL and MTC organised writing drivers to allow their programs to work to work on the Silhouette.

The Silhouette is not a cartridge based cutter so I don't think the same problem is likely to arrise as with ProvoCraft.   MTC already works with the Silhouette SD.   Does anyone know how that was accomplished?  It might be worth asking Andy whether or not it is likely to happen for the new Studio software.

I thought the Eclips was looking good and I had heard last year on the grapevine (actually Sizzix) that they were thinking in the future they may provide/allow other software to be used in conjunction with the Eclips.  I see that they are going to use SCAL which sadly I think is not a very strong program (as yet).

Here is a You Tube video from a Cameo owner starting from Unpacking to actually doing a cut, and there are some good tips as well. For me its a No Brainer I can open SVG files using the designer software or use Inkscape to open any SVG file and export as a PNG file to open using the normal studio software.

Judge for yourself:  http://www.youtube.com/embed/Po3dRIuk9Ns

and here is a link for the Silhouette Blog: http://blog.silhouetteamerica.com/ go back a couple of pages and see the fabric cutting...

And I have recently learnt from another Silhouette forum that the New Blade attachment for the Cameo can be used on the SD silhouette model (as this was her example) and she reckoned that she cut 300gsm card with 1 CUT!!!!!! and because she is UK based I will be asking her where she got her New Blade attachment.....

That is very interesting Angela.  I wonder if it will work in the version before the SD?

Hi Technomum

I have just left the other forum asking for info as too where she purchased the New Blade attachment, because the blade system for the grey silhouette is the same as the SD and I'm quite willing to purchase and test; not that it will prevent me from buying my Cameo.........

This was just posted on Facebook by SVG Cuts...ATTN: future Silhouette Cameo owners - We don't have the machine yet, but we are testing the Silhouette Studio Designer Edition software (with SVG support). So far the files that we CAN import are cutting beautifully with our SD, but the software is still a bit iffy as some of the files just don't import. We are working with Silhouette to get it all figured out! We have also been informed that the Silhouette Cameo does NOT work with SCAL 3 at this time. We don't really know if it will work with SCAL in the future.

Hi Mz Daisy, I think Leo said the SVG import was minor. The imported file did not turn up on the centre of the page and you had to scroll down to find it. They have reported the problem to Silhouette. As it is a new program I am sure they will fix any bugs.

As to SCAL and MTC working with the Cameo, if the driver information is not locked programmers will be able to access the information and write programs or plug-ins to cut from their software to the Cameo if they wish. I think Silhouette are just being cautious and not stating it will work with 3rd party programs. I guess if they did and there was a problem with the 3rd party software they would recieve many complaints. I think it is a case of 'lets wait and see what happens'.

Obviously Inkscape is my program of choice and if I wish not to learn a new program I can design in Inkscape and just use the Cameo software to do the cutting. At the moment I use Sign Cut for the cutting so to me there is not much difference.

I don't see another PC fiasco happening over the software for any of the companies because the cutter manufacturers are working with MTC or SCAL to make sure they work well with them.

Laurianne, you must ask yourself, "Self, will I make lots of cuts larger than 8"?"  If you can answer yourself with a "YES!", then you NEED the Cameo.   ;)

I have the Designer Version and I have had absolutely no trouble with opening svg's. I have never had one fail. They do come in a bit larger than the original but as long as they are grouped when you adjust the size it should not be any trouble.

I think it is still early days and there are more things to come.  One being the ability to export as a vector pdf (as is possible with the old RM).  It is on the list but I don't think it has priority at the moment.  I love the eraser and the knife - they are really useful.  I would like to see Object to Path as a priority but even though it is on the list, no timescale has been attributed to its inclusion.

Like Carolyn, I am an Inkscape addict and I like the way Silhouette have provided direct import of svgs rather than via some other software.   I was very disappointed to see the Eclips is going to use SCAL to import SVG's.   The Eclips looked promising until that time. Re the Cameo.  I think the size may not be as important as the fact that is will cut 300gsm card.  To me that was the biggest plus but I am not a scrapbooker and so rarely cut a full 12" template.
