The Future of this Forum:

The Inkscape Project will open its first official forum, on the Inkscape website, this August (2019). (Address/link will be provided at that time.) When that happens, new registrations will no longer be allowed in this forum and Inkscape support will be provided in the new forum. This forum will still be open for a while, so that existing topics can be finished, and existing users can have access to their contents. But all potential new members should register on the Inkscape website, and post their questions in the new forum, starting in August. If you have any questions or comments, you can post them here.

Since there haven't been any new messages for so long, and no one has ever replied to this message of mine I'm considering closing this forum entirely, in approx 6 months. If anyone has any comments about that, please feel free to post them.

Convert png to svg cutting file
« on: August 17, 2012, 01:16:54 PM »
I need to convert a transparent background png to both a .dxf and an svg cutting file that will work in Silhouette Studio as well as other machines.  Here are the steps I've been through so far:

I used Bullzip PDF printer to save my filled .studio file as a 600 dpi .pdf.  I opened the .pdf in PhotoShop Elements, used the magic wand, and removed all of the background and color inside the cutouts, cropped, then saved it as the transparent background .png file.

I opened the .png file in Inkscape.  I have saved it in each of the various svg formats except the compressed ones, and as a dxf.  (I used the Better DXF Output add-in).  I can open the svgs in Studio, but they are not cutting files.  How do I make it an svg that is a cutting file?

I'd really appreciate some help with this!   :?  I have lots of files that must be converted!

Thanks, Angel13.  I don't believe that's going to help me.  Am I wrong?

I started with a .studio file.  I have the designer version of Silhouette Studio.  I need to make a dxf and an svg from my studio file which I converted to a png.  I got the png opened  in Inkscape, and I believe what I need to do is trace it, but I can't seem to get it done.  I saved it in a bunch of formats, but none of them can be used in .studio.  I need to be able to offer my customers dxf and svg files that I created in studio.  The dxf and the svg must be ones that Studio users can cut with, and they aren't.

What do I need to do?
