The Future of this Forum:

The Inkscape Project will open its first official forum, on the Inkscape website, this August (2019). (Address/link will be provided at that time.) When that happens, new registrations will no longer be allowed in this forum and Inkscape support will be provided in the new forum. This forum will still be open for a while, so that existing topics can be finished, and existing users can have access to their contents. But all potential new members should register on the Inkscape website, and post their questions in the new forum, starting in August. If you have any questions or comments, you can post them here.

Since there haven't been any new messages for so long, and no one has ever replied to this message of mine I'm considering closing this forum entirely, in approx 6 months. If anyone has any comments about that, please feel free to post them.

new to inkscape have question
« on: October 13, 2017, 02:21:42 PM »
Hi I am new to Inkscape and new to embroidery. I understand that you can use files called netting.py and netting.inx in inkscape to digitize embroidery files. I have looked all over the internet for these files and the lollypop website that I have been directed to by two different web pages no longer has these files. I was hoping that someone here may have these extensions for inkscape and could email or some how get a copy of them to me. I would truly appreciate any help. Thank-you.

Welcome to the forum!

Ok, I found this sort of old topic about it:  https://www.inkscapecuttingdesign.com/smf/index.php?topic=924.0  A tutorial I guess.

And it looks like the extension can be downloaded here:  http://svg2embr.wasbo.net/index.php

I'm not sure either how well it works or whether it works at all.

Here's a topic showing another Inkscape user's whole embroidery project from start (drawing the design) to finish (embroidered garments).  It's not very old, but unfortunately the messages all seem to be missing.  I"m looking into getting them replaced.  So  :xf2:

Hi Brynn  :ur: Thank-you! for accepting me and for the reply to my post.  Your first link was the one that brought me to your site. She no longer posts and recommends everyone who views her posts to come to this board. Your second post I have also investigated. Although her online program will digitize things into embroidery pattern it is not very good. I have looked at the code she provides on the site but i do not see the inkscape extensions i am looking for there.  I was hoping to be able to do a better job if I could do the process my self  and I think I could in Inkscape (though I am at the beginning of the learning curve on it right now.) I am hoping that files that cut things in wood or on cutting machines would not be too different that files that run an embroidery machine. Of course I could purchase a program that could do what i am looking for but its well over $100 dollars. I have the time to learn but not the money to spend.

Your last sentence really gives me some encouragement. I hope you can find the messages because that is what I am looking for. Again Thank-you for you help. May you day be blessed. Debby

Aarrgh, rats!  I had found the topic, but with the images missing, it's rather meaningless.  I just forgot to paste in the link (think I was falling asleep at the moment ).  Anyway, I messaged him, so we can find a way to get them back.  It might just be a problem with his website (where they are hosted).  But one way or another, I'm fairly sure we can find a way to get them back.  (Oh!  Maybe try the wayback machine??)

https://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php?topic=336.0

Well Inkscape does not have a fully functional embroidery program.  I've heard about someone working on some kind of embroidery program, but I don't know how extensive it will be, or about their progress, or any estimate when it might be available.  If you're interested in the programming side of it, you can find the messages in the mailing list archives:  https://sourceforge.net/p/inkscape/mailman/inkscape-devel/  Probably you can just search "embroidery" to find them. (I think the archives also contain email addresses, if you wanted to contact them.)

You didn't mention what kind of coding skills you have.  Although even if you did, I probably wouldn't understand.  It is true that there's a nexus between vector paths, cutting programs, and embroidery programs.  But as far as I understand, it gets pretty tough with embroidery.  For cutting, the raw vector paths, or code generated by the paths (such as gcode) is all that's needed.  For embroidery, you have all these other things to consider, such as stitch type and length, type of fabric, deciding whether to take a half stitch when approaching a border (for satin stitch type of stitches) and etc.  At least that's my understanding.  It's also my understanding that the complexity with embroidery is probably why Inkscape doesn't have an extension for this yet.

The guy who is doing the embroidery work with Inkscape (the one with missing images) Inkscape basically only does the artwork.  He does rely on other software to run the machine (for those extra things I mentioned above).

I'll try to do some more research about finding that extension.  It's possible he's using a different extension, because that site (wasbo.net) does not look the one I looked at while following the above topic.  But in any case, that's the only address we have for that extension.  So if they aren't there, we need to try and find if they're available anywhere.  I'll keep you posted.

Ok, I found a comment in yet a 3rd forum, where he says he used the tutorials from the wasbo.net site, but he used the extension found on this site:  http://www.jonh.net/~jonh/inkscape-embroidery/.  I seem to have some vague recollection that the extensions which were on wasbo.net have been missing for quite a while.  But as I said,  I'll do some more research on that.

This other extension (jonh.net site) isn't a fully fledged embroidery program either.  But he does use it for part of the process.  Whenever I hear from him about the images, I ask him if it's ok for me to share his email address with you, if you like.

Ok, the first thing I found in the research is this page:  http://svg2embr.wasbo.net/index.php  It looks like they don't make the extension available anymore, but rather convert your files that you upload.  It may not work at all, and it wouldn't do any good for me to test, because I wouldn't know an embroidery file if it bit me!

But if you try it, would you let me know what happens?  It will help me to update the info which the Inkscape project maintains about extensions.

And it looks like there's a forum here:  http://www.wasbo.net/svg2embr/phpBB3/  It doesn't look very active....but it's not exactly archaic either.

Still researching....

Did I just find the extension?  https://www.dropbox.com/s/zch6y16dz3rc0pd/svg2embrOffline.zip  Hhmmm....no, apparently not.  If it were an extension, it would contain both PY and INX file or files.  I don't see either.

I'm thinking they must have decided to convert files for their visitors, rather than maintain extensions for Inkscape.

But hopefully you will learn more with all the other info I shared, especially the mailing list discussions.

Here's another extension for embroidery:  https://github.com/stesie/inkscape-embroidery  All I know is that it works with Inkscape 0.48.3, and not with Ubuntu  12.04.  If you learn anything else about it, would you let me know, so I can update our info?

Wow Brynn thank-you for all the work you are putting into this! The flamingos thread looks to be really interesting. I do not (sadly) work in Python. Wish I did and I may try to learn. I used to do some coding for CNC machines which worked with gcodes. But that was quite a few years ago now. I have installed the embroidery extension from this website http://www.jonh.net/~jonh/inkscape-embroidery/ but when I try to run it i get a message that says: Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "embroider.py", line 35, in <module>
    import shapely.geometry as shgeo
ImportError: No module named shapely.geometry

when I google shapely.geometry I have found these files https://pypi.python.org/pypi/Shapely    (none that say shapely.geometry exactly) but then I do not know how to install them as a module which I think I would also have to rename. But just putting them in the Extentions folder (which works for .py and .inx files does not work for this program call even if I rename them. I have looked at Jon Howell's code https://github.com/stesie/inkscape-embroidery/blob/master/embroider.py
but much of it looks to be dependent on shapely. If I change the call there I have no way to compile the programing back into python.

I am beginning to think I am in way over my head. I may be able to learn to write python but I am not sure it would be worth all the effort However I am willing to try to install shapely as a module if someone could give me direction. If that fails I guess I save my pennies until I can afford to purchase a program that will do what i want.

I've heard from the author of the topic with the missing messages, and unfortunately, the images have been lost (no backups).  But he is just starting another project.  So you can follow that progress in this topic, and even contact him there.  So far, he just has the model photo and a line drawing, but as I said, you can follow.  https://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php?topic=790.0

I don't know if ha1flosse can help with the traceback error, but it can't hurt to ask.  Also, he just told me about a new website he started:  http://www.haifashion.eu/

It's possible that extension will work on an older version of Inkscape.  Since Inkscape is free, and not super large, it's a fairly simple matter to install an older version.  Especially on Windows, where you can get the 7z versions.  (I think they might work because they will have older version of python.)

Since I keep having to chase down all these links for different people, I'm going work on consolidating all the info in one place.  I'll post it somewhere here too, when it's finished.  It sounds like I might end up learning there's currently nothing working really very well.  But we'll see.

Anyway, good luck!  If you can get something working, please show us the final result  :)

Help I hate to be such a pest but I can not get into inkscape community. It doesn't accept my user name and password from this site and it will not let me register even though I feel I followed all the instructions for registration. It keeps coming up with improper password even though I have changed the password 3 times to comply with the rules listed. It did let me see the thread as a guest. The rooster looks awesome.

Tell me how far you got.  When you first register, you have to solve a question.  Then you should get a message telling you to look for the confirmation email.  Then you need to click the link in it.  And then you should be able to log in.   (It's all to keep the spammers out.)  Where did things start to go wrong?

If you're using the same username as here, it doesn't look like you've successfully registered yet.

Edit
Oh, I missed something.  You have to register a new username and password.  Even though I own and manage both, they are separate sites.  So your creds here won't work there.  I've thought about merging them, but....well, it's a long story.

Anyway, look for the link to register.

Good Morning Brynn, I have the following problems: 1. the site will not accept my pass word no matter what I put in for a password. I have tried several all following the rules typed in red.  2. it says to read the underlined sentence and type in the word that appears in red three times but there is no underlined sentence. so I left that blank.  if I push the button at the bottom of the page the page reloads with the verify password box blank.

Ok now I totally reloaded the registration page and it went through just fine, however I got a different sentence this time, it said what  color do you get if you if you mix this color (typed in Blue) with this color( typed in  red) success!

Hi Brynn just a quick question I hope. Can you have two inkscape versions on one computer or do I need to uninstall v0.9 to put in the older version?

Before you try that, see my reply to your last message in the Chicken topic.

I'm not sure which older version the extension might work with.  But yes, you can have more than one version of Inkscape, as long as only one is truly installed.  Zip files technically don't install programs.  They're more or less self-contained.  So for example, if you already installed Inkscape, using exe or msi package, you can get more versions by downloading and extract or unzip the 7z package.  Just put each version in a different folder.

But I think I see how to get Shapely installed, which I posted there.
