The Future of this Forum:

The Inkscape Project opened its first official forum on its website this month (August 2019). https://inkscape.org/forums/ In an effort to combine all the different forums into one, this forum will no longer be accepting new members or new messages. However, it will remain open for a little while, for existing members, to have access to their contents, if they need them.

Any potential new members should register on the new forum, and post their message there. There is a special board for questions about using Inkscape for cutting machines (of all kinds). (https://inkscape.org/forums/cutplot/)

If you have any questions or comments (and you're an existing member) you can post them here.

Although I've been planning to put this forum in read-only mode, at the time of this transition, unfortunately, my personal circumstances have changed, and I won't be able to host this forum much longer. I'm not sure about the time frame. It could be as soon as the end of 2019, or as long as a year from now. If anyone is interested in taking it over, please contact me.

How do you draw a Shadow Mat around object and text?
« on: September 01, 2010, 02:41:26 PM »
I am trying to learn how to put a drawing with text and make a shadow mat. I am fairly new to all this.
Carloyn's video on doing this with text is great, but say how do you add a "sun"?
Everytime I try it I don't get it right.
Thank you in advance for all your help.

Here is an example is you scroll down on her blog to "snowscape".

I do really well with written instrcutions.

Thank you
Debbie

Welcome Debbie,

I usually do write written instructions to go with any video but have been too busy the last few weeks and need to find time to catch up.

I had a look at your link and this could be achieved by using either outset or linked offset. Don't worry if you don't know what I just said as I will write up some instructions within the next few hours with an example.

Hi Debbie,

I have uploaded instructions to help you create the shadow mats and they can be found here htpp://www.inkscapecuttingdesign.com/smf/index.php?topic=402.0 [lost link]

I really feel stupid.  I have tired for hours to get these to work.  On the "Ouset to create shadow mat" pdf, it only works on the word for me.  I did the steps, path to union, and it still had a box around the word and the sun.  Then I thought that if I did object-group, after path-union that would work, but then it wouldn't do anything.  When I try the "linked offset shadow mat" pdf I don't get a node.  I somehow must be missing a step. I am sorry to be so much trouble.  Any help would be appreciated.  I am on windows XP and inkscape .47.  UGH!

Thank you,
Debbie (The one that feels REALLY dumb)

Hi Debbie,

Don't feel dumb. If something fails it does make life difficult. If we can work out what is happening and find the solution for you it will start getting easier.

When objects are grouped you will not be able to do anything. One problem solved.

Would you like to privately send the file to me and I will have a look? If the file works for someone else we know to look for another solution. It could be your default settings in Inkscape. I am using Inkscape 0.47 and can test it on a computer with XP.

Thank you Carolyn.  It is just so frustrating.  I would like to do that.   Could you tell me what I need to do to get it ready to send it to you?  How many steps do I need to do.  I am so new at trying to figure this out.  What type of file it should be saved at.  ETC.
I am so grateful for this board and you and everyones help.
Words can't say enough.
Thank you,
Debbie

YEAH!  I figured it out!

Here is how I did it:

File-import (choose svg)
Size and change color if needed
highlight-object-ungroup
path-simpilfy
path-union

Type text
size and make changes
path-union

edit-select all
path-union

edit-duplicate (change color to be able to see layers)
Path-ouset (repeat this as many times as you need to fill out the layer)
move layer to bottom.

Thank you all for you help (I am learning to fish!)
