Snowflake construction

Have been trying to design snowflakes and am wondering if there is 'proper' way of getting the 6 arms at the correct angle, rather than just by trial and error?  I'm sure I've seen something somewhere about angles but can't remember where.

It's all right, have just figured out using CTRL with rotation.  Then I realised all I had to do was make a 6 point star very long and thin!

Hi Ruth,  The video Susan recommends is good and Carolyn also does a video on rotating tiled clones.  Well worth watching.   If you make one "arm" of your snowflake and use Path>Union to weld the shapes together, pull down the rotation cross mark to the bottom of your "arm" and then follow the tiled clones video you can make a snowflake that way too.  Remember to choose 60 degrees in the Rotation box and 6 for the column in the Symmetry box.   Both very easy when you know how :P

Well here you are, after a few false starts I did manage a snowflake BUT it crashes Scal *probably because I didn't connect the bits together and have that line in the circle left over...
The tutorials are BRILL.  I understand more now in a few hours than about 3 years!

Hi Donna,

What version of SCAL are you using?  I imported your file into SCAL2 with no problem.  If you are using SCAL1 then the problem is that you have an Object/Group in your file.  You also have crossing cut lines that will cut your snowflake to pieces.  I changed from a fill to a stroke so that you can see what will cut.

The first thing that you should do is to use Object/Ungroup (I think I did that twice on your file) until there are no more Groups.  Then, since you still have linked clones, the easiest fix for the straight lines up the rays is to fix the master artwork while the clones are still linked.  Move one of the lines (with the node tool) until it crosses the other and use Path/Union.  Then you can just tidy up the nodes, unlink the clones (Edit/Clone/Unlink clones), select all of the rays, then use Path/Union.  HTH

I have changed the video back to public. I was in the process of removing older, outdated videos from my old You Tube channel.

Keep in mind if you watch the video that it is old and I find method 2 on this page http://www.inkscapecuttingdesign.com/smf/index.php?topic=425.0  is faster than using transform. Of course, we all work differently and it is good to have options. One day I may find spare time and be able to update the rotation video and add different methods instead of just tranform.
