Viewing Svg files stored on your computer
« on: December 09, 2010, 03:35:27 AM »
Since moving to Windows 7 I miss being able to preview my SVG files. If anyone else has the same problem, there is now a solution.
Denise at http://http://purplepaperparadise.blogspot.com/2010/11/viewing-your-svg-files.html shows how it works using IrfanView (free download).
A pity I didn't know sooner as I have been using Irfanview for years and did not know I could view my SVG files. I did find downloading and installing the latest version of the program gives a better result.

Hi, is it working for you now? I do find I get a message through any image saying to buy cad................. to remove the image.

As I am bad and do not keep all my files neat and tidy on the computer, I find I can right click with the mouse and then select OPEN WITH and then choose Irfanview and I can view my SVG file.

Carolyn, thanks for this link but I downloaded the Iranview and the plugins and even tried twice and am not able to view svg files. I don't even see that on the list of files and I checked other plugins available and don't see the svg as one of the files. Can you help me. I have Windows 7 (64). Am I doing something wrong? I think this is so great if I can view my svg files easier. Thanks, Brenda

Hi Brenda, I am pretty sure Denise who posted the information is using Windows 7 and has a 64 bit computer. I am not sure what is wrong.
Could you try something for me to help narrow down the problem?

Right click on one of your SVG files and select open with ............. Irfanview as shown below in the first screenshot.
The second screenshot is an example of an SVG file opened in Irfanview.

If this works we know the plugins are working and can move on to trying to find out why it won't work for you.

Great to hear you now have it working. It makes it so much easier to find the right file.

Much belated reply, but I have a much better solution to share :D

I installed this recently and it works very well (Windows7, 64-bit):

https://svgextension.codeplex.com/

(IrfanView is a large graphics program, whose biggest stregth, as I understand it, is the ability to work with a lot of different graphics formats.  I installed it long ago, to help me with some cross-format issues.  But I've never needed it since, and have never upgraded it.  I should probably uninstall and get rid of it )

In any case, this is a very small program, and this is all it does, which makes it a perfect solution!
