Changing the default template in Inkscape.
« on: July 15, 2010, 05:02:04 AM »
My first pictorial.
I show the steps I use to change the default template to a 12x12 page.
Dan at My Crafty Life has a video showing how to change the default. http://dan99.blogspot.com/2009/01/video-tutorial-setting-inkscapes.html
A PDF file showing the steps can be downloaded below.

This is GREAT! I knew we could save the "Default", but I didn't know we could save more than one, for different layouts!
Thank you!

I cannot do this at all.  It seems that I only get the disk image (dmg) when I download Inkscape.  The dmg then is read only not offering the "save" function for changing the defaults.  Has anyone with a Mac been able to find the full package anywhere or know what I have to do to get one?  I've tried everything I know to fix this.

I've always downloaded from SourceForge, is there another site that has Mac versions that you know of?

I didn't even realise you couldn't change your default. Hopefully Dawn will see this post and help you with this.

Do you have a templates folder in the Inkscape program files? Could you save the file in the normal manner and then cut and paste it to the template folder?

That's the issue, I don't have an Inkscape program folder.  I have one file that is Inkscap.app.

Yes, maybe Dawn has an answer hopefully.

My problem is SOLVED and I am a VERY HAPPY CAMPER

I went to the Inkscapeforum.com and asked the question about the dmg and how to get to the program files.

A really GREAT guy gave me step by step instructions within an hour or so and I now have my own default.svg for inches, grids etc.

Should any other Mac user show up and ask the question, I'll post the How To here.

I LOVE to learn something new everyday and today was a good day.  Hope all of you had one too.

Great to hear Susan. It will make life so much easier for you.
I can just visualize you creating lots of templates.
Are you going to post it on your blog?

I don't think I'll bother.  I seem to be the only one with the issue and I have searched for an answer for awhile.  If anyone else with a Mac needs to know how to open the dmg files in order to save a default template just ask and  I'll for sure write it up, but for now I'll just be happy that I have my own personal template and I can play around with more.

Here's what I posted in the comments on Dan99's video on this a long time ago. Applies to this one as well
For Mac users, the process is similar but to find the default.svg file, go to the Finder, Choose "Go to Folder" from the Go menu and type
/Applications/Inkscape.app/Contents/Resources/templates
That'll put you in the right folder.
