New Silhouette Design program
« on: January 25, 2011, 11:15:46 AM »
Sorry if someone has asked already but I was wondering if anyone has downloaded the new program from Silhouette that replaces the RoboMaster program and if yes is there downfalls to it? have the bugs been worked out or should I wait in downloading the new program?

Hi. I downloaded Silhouette Studio 10 days ago for use with the Robo.  I have found it very easy to work with, especially having used Inkscape as a lot of it is similar.  Though I must say there are some things I think are better/easier in Inkscape.  I guess there is no such thing as the perfect all round programme.  I have to admit I wasn't sure I should mention it on this forum!

Hi Scrapthat

Yes I downloaded the Silhouette Studio software when it first came out last year, and I know I will love it once all the bugs have been worked out; and Ruth you are correct it has a lot of features that are similar too Inkscape.

It is worth downloading and trying out, and there is no need to get rid of the Robomaster software; because you can have both programmes on your PC......and its MAC compatible with no need for plugin's.......

First let me apologize for the delay. We just moved and things are a little hectic around here.
So by downloading the Sil Studio I don't have to uninstal Robomaster?
That's cool. I have always been irritated with the Robomaster on 2 points...1. why does it come on and slow up my system as soon as I turn on my computer??? If I am not using the program then I don't want it coming on and bogging down my system...I have to do a Ctrl Shift Esc every morning to get rid of it first thing.
and Two it's a pain to do the welding unless it's a solid shape...which is why inkscape is so great.
Do you mind elaborating on what the bugs you have run into?
Thanks again for the help!!
You are always answering my silly questions :)

Hi Scrapthat

I've now had Studio for 4 weeks or so and have been playing about with it quite a bit and have only had one blip which is that when I type out all the letters of the alphabet and "thicken" them in one go SS goes into "Not Responding" for a few seconds while it works on it then it comes back to life having done the job.  Apart from that, which is not really an issue, I have had no problems.  I do miss the zoom with "+" key and the spiral tool.

Thank you for letting me know! Seems like an improvement from the robo as that one will sometimes go to do a weld and you wait and wait and nothing happens and you have to Escape the whole thing which if you have worked on a bunch of other things you lose that too.
Again thanks for the info! :)

I downloaded the latest version of SS last night but am having problems with it. When I tried to import into My Library from Robo Master nothing seemed to happen but afterwards whenever I tried to view My Library in SS the program shut down. I can't open gsd files without it shutting down unexpectedly. I have uninstalled SS, restored XP, reinstalled SS but it is still unstable on my machine.  :?

On the face of it, it looks as if it would be very easy to use and has lots of features I like the look of but I'm not sure if it is worth persisiting with on my pc. I might install it on my laptop with Windows 7 and see if I have more success.

Hi Linda

It might be worth it too send an EMail too the Silhouette Team at: support@silhouetteamerica.com they are usually very quick with a response.

I just went and had another look at the instructions for downloading the software, and there is this bit about importing your Library:

To import your shapes: Once the installation is complete, you may want to import all the shapes you currently have in My Library. To do this, open Silhouette Studio and choose File -> Import ROBO Master Library... This process will take several minutes and will only work if you have ROBO Master installed on your PC.

Hi Angel,

Thank you for your suggestion.

I had followed the instructions for importing my ROBO Master library but it hadn't worked. The support team at sillouette answered my email very quickly and advised me to reindex my library. This seems to have stopped the program from crashing now and I am able to load gsd and gst files.  :D

Oooo Linda, thats brilliant I have to admit that I need to sit down at the weekend and seriously play with the studio program; and see what it can do especially with the Print and Cut feature which I have read is much improved.

Will the library of images show up in both programs? As I am not sure I want to keep the SS just yet, and then not be able to go back to my original library..

Hi Inky

What I do is download GSD Files using the Robomaster Software. Then If I decide to use the Studio software, then I can open the GSD file and then save it as a Studio file; which then means that I have 2 different file formats. I have been informed that you can design a file using the Studio software and save it as a GSD but you can't then open that GSD file in the old Robomaster Software.......

Hope this explanation has not confused you too much..... Oh and yes you can have 2 images libraries..........

Hi JoL, These are the instructions I got from SS suport
Go to the “File” menu (PC) or “Silhouette Studio” menu (Mac) and select Preferences > Advanced. Here we would direct you to “Reindex My Library”.

Although I can open gsd and gst files in SS, I don't have a folder for "My Library" in Craft Robo so haven't been able to import all my files in one hit. I'm just importing them individually, as and when I want to use them.
